At Hosting Safari, a dedicated server in India currently starts at ₹5,999 per month for a dual Intel Xeon E5-2670 v3 machine (24 cores, 64 GB RAM, 2 x 480 GB SSD) and goes up to ₹33,999 per month for a dual AMD EPYC 7K62 server with 512 GB RAM and 2 x 3.2 TB NVMe. What decides the price is the processor, the amount of RAM, the type and size of storage, and the extras you add on top, such as extra drives, a control panel, licences, backups and management.

This guide breaks down what you actually pay for, lists current plan prices from our dedicated server page, and shows how to pick a configuration without overpaying.

What is a dedicated server?

A dedicated server is a complete physical machine in a data centre that is rented to one customer only. All of its processor cores, memory and disks are yours. Nothing is shared with other customers, so there is no "noisy neighbour" slowing your applications down, and you get root (Linux) or administrator (Windows) access to configure it as you like.

That is the main difference from a VPS, where one physical server is split into several virtual servers. A VPS is cheaper and is often the right first step; a dedicated server makes sense when you need the full power of a machine, heavy storage, or strict isolation for your data.

What you actually pay for in a dedicated server

1. Processor (CPU)

The CPU is the biggest single factor in price. More physical cores and threads let the server handle more users and more work at the same time. Dual-processor servers (marked "2 x") carry two CPUs on one board. For websites and light business applications, a dual Xeon E5 server is usually plenty. For large databases, virtualisation, or many remote users working at once, higher core counts on Xeon Gold or AMD EPYC servers are worth the extra cost.

2. RAM

Memory decides how much data the server can keep ready to use. Plans on our list range from 64 GB to 512 GB. Databases, ERP systems such as SAP, and servers that host many virtual machines or Remote Desktop users benefit most from more RAM.

3. Storage type and size

Storage is where configurations differ the most. SATA SSDs are fast and affordable; SAS SSDs are built for heavier enterprise workloads; NVMe drives are the fastest and suit databases and applications that read and write a lot of data. You can add drives to a server. Current add-on prices are:

Add-on drivePrice per month
480 GB Enterprise SSD₹1,200
960 GB Enterprise SSD₹2,000
1.92 TB Enterprise SSD₹3,000
3.84 TB Enterprise SSD₹5,000
3.2 TB NVMe (Platinum servers only)₹3,690
6.4 TB NVMe (Platinum servers only)₹7,150
15.3 TB NVMe (Platinum servers only)₹15,400

4. RAID

RAID combines several drives so that the server can keep running if one drive fails, or so that reads and writes are faster. A hardware RAID card is included in all the plans listed above, which saves you a cost that is often charged separately.

5. Operating system and software licences

Linux distributions are generally free to use. Windows Server, MS SQL Server, a control panel or other commercial software need licences, and these can add noticeably to the monthly bill. Ask for licences to be listed as separate line items so you can see exactly what you are paying for.

6. Management and support

An unmanaged server means your own team looks after the operating system, security updates, firewall and backups. A managed or semi-managed arrangement hands some or all of that to the hosting company. If you do not have an in-house system administrator, include the cost of management when you compare quotes, because a cheaper unmanaged server can become expensive if it is not looked after properly.

7. Backups

RAID protects against a failed disk, not against deleted files, ransomware or a bad update. A proper backup copy kept away from the server is a separate cost worth budgeting for. See our backup and recovery service for options.

Hidden costs to check before you buy

  • GST: confirm whether the quoted price includes tax.
  • Licences: Windows Server, SQL Server and control panel licences.
  • Extra storage: a second drive or larger NVMe for growing data.
  • Backups: off-server backup storage and how often backups run.
  • Extra IP addresses if you need more than one.
  • Management: who patches, monitors and secures the server.
  • Migration: moving your existing data and applications to the new server.

Which configuration fits your business?

Use caseGood starting point
Several busy business websites or an online storeDual Intel Xeon E5 with 64 GB RAM and SSD storage
Remote Desktop server for an accounting or office teamDual Xeon E5 v4 or Xeon Gold with 64–128 GB RAM
ERP, SAP or large database workloadsXeon Gold 6154 or AMD EPYC with 256 GB RAM and NVMe storage
Virtualisation, many virtual machines, or heavy analyticsDual AMD EPYC 7K62 with 256–512 GB RAM and NVMe

For SAP workloads specifically, our SAP on cloud service can size and set up the server for you.

Dedicated server or VPS?

If your workload does not need a whole machine, a Linux VPS or Windows VPS costs less and lets you add RAM, CPU and storage as you grow. Choose a dedicated server when you need consistent high performance, large amounts of RAM or storage, full hardware isolation for sensitive data, or the freedom to run your own virtual machines. Our earlier guide, VPS vs shared hosting, explains the steps below dedicated servers.

How to get the right price

  1. List your workloads: websites, applications, databases and the number of users.
  2. Estimate your data: how much storage you need today and in a year.
  3. Decide on management: will your team run the server, or do you want help?
  4. Ask for an itemised quote: server, add-on drives, licences, backups and tax shown separately.
  5. Plan the migration: agree on how and when your data will move.
