Many businesses already use one or more TDLs on their office computers. When you move to Tally on Cloud, those TDLs need to be loaded on the cloud server as well, because Tally now runs there instead of on your local PC.

How Tally on Cloud works

With Hosting Safari Tally on Cloud, TallyPrime is installed on a Windows cloud server. Each user gets a separate login and connects through Remote Desktop (RDP) or a web link from Windows, Mac, Android or iOS. Your data stays on the server and is backed up regularly. Because Tally runs on the server, any TDL must be stored on and loaded from that server too.

Before you begin

  • Keep a copy of the TDL file you want to use, along with any licence or setup notes from the TDL developer.
  • Confirm the TDL is meant for your Tally version (TallyPrime or Tally ERP 9). A TDL written for an older release may not work on a newer one.
  • Make sure you have your Tally on Cloud login details for Remote Desktop.
  • Take a backup of your company data first, using Alt+Y (Data) > Backup in TallyPrime.

How to load a TDL file on Tally on Cloud

On Hosting Safari Tally on Cloud you load TDLs yourself, the same way as on a local computer:

  1. 1. Connect to your Tally on Cloud server using Remote Desktop.
  2. 2. Copy the TDL file from your computer to a folder on the server (for example, a folder named TDL inside your user area). Note the full path of the file.
  3. 3. Open TallyPrime on the server.
  4. 4. Press F1 (Help) and choose TDLs & Add-ons.
  5. 5. Select Manage Local TDLs.
  6. 6. Set the option to load TDL files on startup to Yes, and enter the full path of the TDL file in the list of TDL files to preload.
  7. 7. Save the settings (Ctrl+A). Check that the status shows the TDL as loaded.
  8. 8. Open the voucher, report or feature the TDL changes and confirm that it works as expected.

On a multi-user server, each user who needs the customisation should load the TDL in their own TallyPrime session, so that all of them see the same features.

Troubleshooting common TDL issues

The TDL does not load

Check that the file path entered in Manage Local TDLs exactly matches where the file is saved on the server. A spelling mistake in the folder or file name is the most common cause.

The TDL loads but shows an error

The TDL may have been written for a different Tally release. Contact the TDL developer for a version that matches your TallyPrime release, then load the updated file.

Only some users see the customisation

The TDL may have been loaded for one user profile only. Load it from Manage Local TDLs in each user's TallyPrime session as well.

Two TDLs conflict

If you load several TDLs, they can occasionally change the same screen. Disable one at a time in Manage Local TDLs to find the conflict, and then ask the developer to fix it.

Good practice when using TDLs on the cloud

  • Only use TDL files from a developer or source you trust.
  • Take a company data backup before you load a new TDL.
  • Test the TDL on a test or sample company before using it on live data where possible.
  • Keep a list of the TDLs in use so they can be reloaded quickly if needed.
