To take a Tally backup on the cloud, log in to your cloud server, open TallyPrime and press Alt+Y (Data) > Backup, then choose the companies and the backup folder. To restore, use Alt+Y (Data) > Restore. On Hosting Safari Tally on Cloud, your data is also backed up regularly on the server, with daily backups on Gold and higher plans.

Why backing up Tally data matters

Your Tally data holds your books of accounts, GST records and inventory. Losing it can stop billing, delay filings and create audit problems. Regular backups protect you against:

  • Accidental changes – A wrong entry, deleted voucher or bad import can be undone by restoring an earlier backup.
  • Hardware and software problems – A damaged disk or virus does not have to mean lost data.
  • Year-end and audit needs – Keep a copy of the data as it stood at year end or before a major change.
  • Sharing with your CA – A backup file is an easy way to hand over data.

How to take a backup in TallyPrime

These steps work the same way on a cloud server as on a local computer:

  1. Log in to your Tally on Cloud server through Remote Desktop (RDP) or the web link.
  2. Open TallyPrime.
  3. Press Alt+Y to open the Data menu and select Backup.
  4. Check the source path (where your company data is stored) and set the destination path (the folder where the backup should be saved).
  5. Select the company you want to back up. You can select one company or several companies.
  6. Confirm to start the backup. TallyPrime saves the backup file in the destination folder.

If you use the older Tally ERP 9, the backup option was under Gateway of Tally > Alt+F3 (Company Info) > Backup.

How to restore a Tally backup

  1. Log in to your cloud server and open TallyPrime.
  2. Press Alt+Y (Data) and select Restore.
  3. Set the source path to the folder that holds the backup file, and the destination path to the folder where the company data should be restored.
  4. Select the company backup you want to restore and confirm.
  5. Open the restored company and check a few recent vouchers and reports before you start working.

Tip: if the company already exists in the destination folder, restore to a different folder first, check the data, and then decide which copy to keep.

How backups work on Hosting Safari Tally on Cloud

On Hosting Safari, TallyPrime runs on a Windows cloud server and your company data stays on that server, not on individual laptops. This gives you two layers of protection:

Server backups by Hosting Safari

Your data on the server is backed up regularly. Gold and Diamond plans include daily backups. If you need data restored from a server backup, contact our support team.

Your own TallyPrime backups

You can also take your own backups any time with Alt+Y (Data) > Backup, for example before year-end closing, before loading a new TDL or before a large data import. Save them in a separate backup folder on the server so the backup does not overwrite live data.

Copying a backup to your computer

When you connect through Remote Desktop, you can copy a backup file from the server to your own computer if you want to keep an extra copy offline or share it with your accountant.

Good backup habits

  • Take a manual backup before any major change, such as a TallyPrime release update, a new TDL or a data import.
  • Name or date your backup folders so you can find the right copy quickly.
  • Keep at least one copy outside the live data folder.
  • Test a restore now and then, so you know the backup works when you need it.
